We have some exciting learning planned for this week!
The students are working on the presentations for their inquiry projects. Students are writing a fictional story as if they were a part of the Lewis & Clark expedition. I encouraged students to be creative, and told them they could create presentations to go along with the story. They have all of this week to work on it, but may need to do some work at home, depending on the project. In Science, the students are continuing to work on programming. They don't have any instructions for their current project, and are instead using what they have learned throughout the year to create a computer model showing how germs spread in a classroom environment. In math, we are working on multiplying fractions! We have practiced modeling, and are now working through the arithmetic. We also get the opportunity to dissect fish this week! This is part of our Hooked on Fishing program, and I am so excited to see what the kids learn. The students have been working hard all year and earned a class reward, which we will celebrate on Tuesday. They voted on 15 minutes of free time/time with devices. They may use the devices we have at school. We discussed that if they make the choice to bring their own device, they are responsible for it all day. I am so looking forward to this week of learning!

Please make sure to write complete sentences for the answer. For example #1 would start out as: "My definition of autonomous is..." E-mail me with any questions! I can't believe we are halfway through March!
This week in math we are wrapping up addition and subtraction with fractions and moving into multiplication. In ELA we are reading poems and focusing on the different types of poems. Finally, in science, students will work to code a computer program that represents have diseases spread. They won't have any instructions, and will be using what they have learned over the year to create this program! Remember that we have picture day tomorrow! If you are ordering books from the book order, please have those turned in by Monday, March 26th. On top of our in class learning, we have quite a few other activities this week! Tuesday is class picture day. I have received most of the slips back, but remember to send those yellow forms back that state whether or not your child will be participating in the individual pictures as well.
Wednesday at 8:30 is the school spelling bee. We will be attending to support the 4th and 5th graders that made it. On Thursday, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks will be visiting the school for some Fish Math. I can't wait to see what we learn there! In math, we are starting our fractions unit. You can help your child at home by practicing how to find common denominators, and then adding and subtracting these fractions. In science, we are learning how to create models for real life situations, and discussing why scientists may create models. In ELA we are continuing to work on using context clues to decode words that we don't know. We are also discussing how a narrator's point of view can affect a story. Happy (almost) February Everyone!
Our Valentine’s Day party will be held Wednesday, February 14 from 1:00 - 2:00. Dismissal will be at 2:00 as usual on Wednesdays. Making Valentine boxes is voluntary and I will provide paper bags to contain the Valentines for students who choose not to make a box. Students may also bring Valentines for their classmates. If they choose to bring any Valentines, I ask that they bring them for everyone in the class. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. A reminder that we will be having the fish art this Thursday. Please send your child to school with a light-colored cotton shirt. This week we will wrap up our unit on dividing decimals with an assessment on Thursday.
We are continuing to work on expository writing and are writing an essay that describes three ways to keep our mind and body healthy. The students have come up with great ideas so far! In science we are still focusing on the ways our body protects us from germs. In Ms. Martin's science class, the students are learning what inputs and outputs are, and are putting them to use with their test robot. On Tuesday we will have a presentation from the Yellowstone Art Museum, and Friday the 5th graders will learn about internet safety. Please remember that book orders are due this Friday! Just a reminder that our class will be doing the NWEA Reading and Math tests on January 16th and January 18th. Also, book orders went home last Tuesday. Those are due January 26th. You may also follow the link under "Favorite Sites" to order online!
The students will be presenting their math projects throughout this week as well. Along with that, we will continue to explore decimal division and practice different ways to solve decimal division problems. In my science class, students are working with the design process to create and test their own experiments. Then they will be exploring the different systems in our body that protect us against germs. In Ms. Martin's science class, they will start building their robot chassis! This is usually a very exciting lesson in science. In ELA we will be explaining the relationships between two processes in science. Specifically, we will be looking at how a snowflake forms, and the rock cycle. I am excited for another week of learning! Please let me know if you have any questions. The BPS 5th grade art reception night will be on Thursday, February 1st from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Yellowstone Art Museum. The exhibition will be up from January 20 – February 25. Please join us in celebrating our 5th grade artists!
Here are a few important events that are coming up in the 5th grade.
1/9 - Geo Bee 8:30 - 9:30 1/12 - Math projects due and SRI testing 1/16 & 1/18 - NWEA Testing (Reading and Math) 1/23 - YAM presentation 10:30 We will have some time to work on the math projects this week, but most of it should be completed at home! Please let me know if there are any questions about any of these events. Happy New Year! I hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday break. I am so excited to see all of the kiddos back at school.
This week will be short, but we have a lot of work planned! In math, we will continue to work on multiplying decimals and doing a little refresher of where we left off before break. In ELA we are continuing to work on narrative writing, and will soon move into expository writing. In Science, Ms. Ziegler's class will switch to infection detection, where they learn how germs spread, and how to prevent the spread of germs. Ms. Martin's class will begin to explore robots and what different types of robots do. On January 4th, we will have a visitor from ZooMontana coming to present to the 5th grade class. The presentation will be about animals in Native American culture. |
